Only for steel pulleys
The crankshaft pulley is too close to the engine's cooling shroud and cannot be removed with a conventional pulley puller while the engine is in the car.
With this puller this becomes possible, this tool is designed to help remove the crankshaft pulley on all type 1 air cooled engines.
Once the crankshaft bolt is removed, place the puller tool around the crankshaft pulley and tighten the tool. When the crankshaft pulley comes off, pull it off the crankshaft in this manner.
If the crankshaft pulley is too tight, do not continue to turn, you will damage both your pulley and the pulling tool. Make sure the puller is tightened under tension on the crankshaft pulley and gently tap the back of the crankshaft pulley until it comes off by itself. If this does not work, you will have to disassemble the engine and do the job with a conventional pulley puller, but chances are the crankshaft pulley will not survive.
